Bartering System and Weight
Party Wealth
Because gold no longer exists and there is no agreed upon currency, bartering is the primary way of making transactions in Abaddon.
This system is meant to create an abstract system for bartering that does not involve a lot of accounting.
Party wealth is maintained as a cumulative account. Wealth is tracked in the form of Food and Goods.
1 unit of Food and Goods is equal to 1 gold.
1 pound of Food and Goods is equal to 10 Gold.
10 units of Food and Goods is equal to 1 pound of Food and Goods.
Party Weight
The goal is to simulate a trading and bartering system abstractly. When players pick up loot, it either goes into the trade and goods category (most used goods go into this category) or into their personal category.
In order to not worry about individual carried items and weight and move to an abstract system, players reap the benefits and rewards of capacity as a team. It is understood that you are “sharing” the load of the team. When the team reaches maximum capacity, the entire team suffers penalties.
The benefit of this system, is that players may carry a reasonable number of general and wondrous items on their person and need not concern themselves with weight. There is no exact quantity of reasonable, however, players should not knowingly abuse the system. Players may also carry up to 2 armors and 4 weapons. You must have a card for all armor, weapons and magical gear carried.
To calculate the team strength. players add their individuals strengths on this sheet. They may also add the weight of any pack animals with them.
Players subtract 1 from this total strength score for every 50 lbs of food and good they have.
When players reach half of their strength total, they are at medium load. They suffer a -3 armor check penalty and and reduce their speed. Small creatures reduce their speed by 10ft. Players can not be reduced below a speed of 15 ft. The maximum Dex bonus is reduced to 3.
If the total strength score is reduced to 0 the players are carrying a heavy load. They suffer a -6 armor check penalty and the maximum dex bonus is reduced to 1.

Re: Bartering System and Weight
Mar 02 2010 22:48:55 Isn't 10 golds for 1 pound of food a bit much? I mean, that's how much a person (A couch potato, not an adventurer) would eat per day. I understand food is rare, but a common quality meal is 3 sp according to pathfinder (and a loaf of bread is a few cp). I find it strange that food price would increase a hundred fold that way.

Bartering System and Weight
Mar 03 2010 16:17:20 The reason its so much is two fold
Mechanically, its hard to keep track of lesser denominations of "material". Because this acts as a currency system, its too much accounting to track the lbs of actual food andgold it would take in pathfinders real world economy to make bartering work without micromanaging it. Flavor, in a post chaotic world where material and food are difficult to come by, the value ofsaid items goes up. The value of the most basic items is equaivlant to a crossbow or a sword. Few people take up arms against the undead, but everyone eats. |
